Research & Academic Leadership

Evidence-based shoulder and elbow surgery supported by national collaboration, outcomes research, and clinical innovation.

High-volume, subspecialty shoulder and elbow care is strongest when it is grounded in evidence, outcomes, and continuous improvement. My academic work focuses on clinical innovation, biomechanics, and patient-centered outcomes—supported by national collaboration and funded research.

Grant support

  • NIH R01 (Co‑Investigator): Multicenter longitudinal study of acromioclavicular joint reconstruction techniques to restore biomechanics and optimize soft-tissue health.
  • Industry-supported clinical research (Principal Investigator): Tornier PERFORM stemless reverse shoulder and humeral systems (IDE/clinical studies).

Clinical innovation focus

Areas of sustained academic focus include:

  • Rotator cuff healing & biologics (including subacromial bursa–based augmentation strategies)
  • AC joint reconstruction biomechanics and technique optimization
  • Shoulder arthroplasty outcomes and technology-enhanced accuracy (including mixed‑reality workflows)
  • Value-based care & access (cost, safety, and telemedicine reliability)

Selected publications

Selection of representative peer‑reviewed work:

  • Impact of subacromial bursa augmentation on patient‑reported and MRI outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (prospective randomized clinical trial) — American Journal of Sports Medicine.
  • Clinical outcomes of rotator cuff repair with subacromial bursa reimplantation (retrospective cohort study) — JSES International.
  • Tunnel‑free acromioclavicular joint reconstruction: improved initial reduction and patient satisfaction — JSES Reviews, Reports & Techniques.
  • Mixed‑reality guidance improves accuracy of guide‑pin placement during shoulder arthroplasty — Seminars in Arthroplasty: JSES.
  • Acromioclavicular separations: complications and how to avoid them — Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
  • Telemedicine‑based shoulder examinations: reliability and accuracy — Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
